Abukumado cave
Abukumado (ぶ く ま 洞 洞) is a network of limestone caves with more than 3,000 meters, located in the eastern province of Fukushima. The caves were discovered in 1969 and were formed more than 80 million years ago. It has subterranean rivers and innumerable stalactites and stalagmites of many different varieties, as well as unique features that are not seen elsewhere in the country. A two meter high stalagmite found at the site for example is said to be the largest in all of Asia. About 600 meters from the caves are open to the public and are accessible by a series of platforms, stairs and paved sidewalks, and an excellent lighting system that helps visitors to have a good experience during their underground exploration.
